[...] Perhaps hikers leave the trail more empowered by turning their job loss into an opportunity to fulfill their dreams, thus warding off the “Someday Syndrome” and the return home with greater insight into their next move. [...]

My family and I hiked about 14 miles of the Continental Divide trail in Colorado one day when I was a kid--from Monarch Pass to the Waterdog Lakes. I would LOVE to do more.

Don't get me started....it was really tough to decide which trails to put in and which to cut. The American Discovery Trail, which crosses the US East-West, was another one of the big ones that didn't get in there.

Personally, I'm waiting for Ukraine, Georgia and Russia to all make up so the E8 route can happen. Or maybe a Trans-Siberian trail, either would work.

Tackling the AT is one of my life goals... but no matter how many miles one puts in, there are thousands and thousands more that can never be seen.
what a comfort!

Great suggestions! I'll keep these in mind (though I've got a ways to go before I'd be up for tackling the AT, let alone carrying on after...)

Also, don't forget the Trans Canada Trail -- when it's done, it'll be 18,000 kms. Take that, Oz! :)
