The Ultimate World Cup Calendar

With 64 matches, it can be a challenge to keep track of what’s going on in the World Cup. A Flash gadget from a Spanish soccer website takes some of the work out of the process.

Marca.com’s World Cup calendar is a thing of beauty. It sorts matches by four different criteria (group or stage, stadium, team, or date) and displays results from past games. The app also just looks wicked cool. Its design is somewhere in between compass and aerial view of Soldier Field.

After a few minutes playing around on the site, I found that if I moused over the colored outside edges of the oval, I’d get cool infographics like a world map showing all the 2010 World Cup qualifiers and a bracket showing how the tournament is structured.

To me, this calendar seems way overdue. The World Cup can get overwhelming (though not as much as the Olympics) and it’s neat to see all of this data compiled so stylishly. The page has been retweeted over 16,400 times, so there must be at least a few people who agree with me.
