The Olympic Torch relay was not an ancient tradition. It was started in 1936 by Hitler for the Berlin Games as a way of drumming up support for his propaganda games.

Most recently, when China paraded it's torch around the world, it had nothing to do with world peace. It was a carefully calculated attempt to gain tacit approval for the Beijing Games as a "non-political" event. They were specifically hoping that the world wouldn't question their broken promises on human rights, the environment, and pollution.

The Olympics are by definition political. And it has nothing to do with world peace!

I got to carry the Torch when it passed through Quebec earlier this month and the experience itself is simply fantastic. The hype surrounding the whole thing really builds up and you can't help but feel "special" knowing that you're the only person in the whole world, at that particular moment, to be holding the Olympic Flame. Definitely a 'proud-to-be-Canadian' moment.
